Dr. Steven Hou received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1994 and completed postdoctoral training with Dr. Norbert Perrimon at Harvard Medical School in 1997. He became a Tenure-track Investigator at NCI-Frederick in September 1997 and received tenure as a Senior Investigator in May 2006.
His laboratory is interested in understanding how intercellular signals regulate development in embryo and regeneration in adult. They have been studying the JAK-Stat signaling in Drosophila. From his work and that of many others, it has emerged that the same signaling controls numerous decisions in development and also regulates stem cells in various adult tissues, including testis, kidney, stomach, and intestine. Current work is directed at understanding how adult stem cells are regulated in Drosophila and mouse in vivo genetic systems.
